Argentina received significant rainfall over the past week, but the rains came too late for most of the country’s crops. As a result, Argentine soybean and corn production estimates continued to decline. With Argentine corn production prospects declining and planting delays raising potential concerns for Brazil’s safrinha corn crop, China aggressively ramped up its purchases of U.S. corn. The economic focus was the Fed’s decision to raise interest rates 25 basis points, but the bigger story could have been hints it may soon hit the pause button on its monetary tightening. Our page four feature is results from our annual spring planting survey, which indicated corn acres will rise more than expected and soybean plantings will surprisingly be about steady. Meanwhile, the weather situation for this year is lining up with 1976, which could point to warmer and drier summer conditions. We cover all of these items and much more in this week’s newsletter, which you can download here.
