The market adage is that “big crops get bigger” and “small crops get smaller.” Both could end up being true in South America this year, where it’s a tale of two distinctly different crops. Brazil is poised for record crop production, while Argentina’s crops are struggling amid persistent drought. We take an extensive look at South American crop production potential in this week’s page 4 feature. As spring planting in the U.S. draws closer, there will be a greater focus on weather. The extended outlook for spring from the National Weather Service offers some hopes of improved weather in the Plains and Corn Belt. Meanwhile, the National Cotton Council forecasts U.S. cotton acreage will decline sharply, with corn, soybeans and wheat expected to pick up acres. On the trade front, Mexico issued a new corn decree, but the U.S. was “disappointed” it plans to keep a ban on GMO corn imports for human consumption. Financial markets appeared to pivot on the expected path for Fed monetary policy later this year. We cover all of these items and much more in this week’s newsletter, which you can download here.
